When I first came to India, I thought I had known everything about India, but I discovered that most of my knowledge about Indians was in fact my own insecurities and my inability to accept them as they are. For some reason, India’s racism and its impact on Indians are more often than not looked down upon or at least, unacknowledged by other Indians. In this post, I explore the colour and race of Indians in general and of the Black community in particular. Colour What is it that makes India’s racial landscape so multi-layered? Most Indians are dark-skinned, but the skin colour does not necessarily translate to the same way of thinking or behaving. Even on some forums on the internet, where people post about their true selves, I have seen the racism of India repeated in black and brown people. I’ve even heard about incidents of being kicked out of restaurants because of the colour of the people’s skin. Image from the website indiansing.com I am neither exaggerating nor condoning the incidents of racism. I am simply trying to highlight the reality of it. Indian people have to come together in order to challenge racism in our country and in our race. We need to
